This viognier is sourced from new blocks of the McDowell Valley Vineyards in Mendocino County. Grapes are night picked to maintain cold temperatures and whole cluster pressed once they arrive to the winery. The wine is stainless steel fermented and lightly filtered before bottling.
Ripe heady aromas and flavors of white flowers, stone fruits and honeycomb. Ample acidity keeps the palate clean, fresh and vibrant, finishing with subtle dried apricot and citrus notes. Like most viogniers, this is meant for earlier consumption, and should be great over the next year or two, but ideal for the warm summer months just ahead.

Named for the landmark redwood tree, Monument Tree is located literally across the street from Hacienda Secoya vineyard in Anderson Valley. The place and wine could not be more different. The gravelly loam soils are in stark contrast to the ocre colored sandstone and clay of Hacienda. With an eastern sloping exposure, the vineyard avoids the late afternoon sun exposure. The wine is a blend of clones 115 and 777 and possesses a great nervy minerality and vibrant acidity.
Tasting notes:
Earthy wet soil, dried red fruits and flowers are rich and effusive on the nose. Plush dark red fruits flavors are accented by asian spice and black tea on the long finish. Fine grain tannins and great acidity keep the wine taught and lively, making for a good match with food. While enjoyable now with decanting, a short rest in the cellar of two to three years would really let this wine sing and should reward those who are patient for 8-10 years.

The vineyard is located in Westside Paso Robles out Hwy 46 about 12 miles from the ocean and Hearst Castle, as a crow flies. The proximity to the ocean helps regulate the high temperatures often associated with Paso Robles and is further aided by tremendous diurnal temperature variations. Peak temperatures can reach the low 100-degree range yet dive into the low 50s at night, allowing for the vines to recover. These large temperature fluctuations between high and low create a very desirable "sugar to acid ratio". This, coupled with the high-lime, calcareous soils which do not allow for a lot of potassium absorption, keep pHs lower, even at elevated sugar levels, resulting in ripe fruity wines with a balanced underlying acidity. This vineyard's attributes aid in my syrah winemaking technique of including 50% to 100% whole cluster, dependant on vintage.
Tasting notes:
Peat Moss, graphite and sweet black fruits carry thru the wine. Interesting chalky minerality and hints of blood orange emerge with air and really add a great complexity to the wine. As with all James Berry Syrahs, the structure and concentration merit a few years in your cellar to really resolve itself and should hold up nicely for 8-12 years.

Perched 1,400 feet high above the valley floor in the Yorkville Highlands, this syrah vineyard is located just shy of the southeastern end of the Anderson Valley. The vines are planted directly into exposed shale so thick that very little top soil is evident in the vine rows. The vines have struggled to get a foothold in this feeble soil but should render a truly site specific wine.
Tasting notes:
Great minerality on the nose with iron and flint like nuances coupled with blue flowers and racy black fruits. Flavors mirror the aromas with a firm vibrant structure that opens well with time in the decanter. The tannins are firm but not drying, with a solid core of pure medium weight fruit that is still light on the palate. This is our finest effort to date from this site and again speaks of our slight shift in approach with syrah. This wine needs a couple of years in bottle to resolve itself and is at least a 12-15 year wine.
