Dalla Valle

Dalla Valle Vineyards overlooks the Napa Valley floor from a hillside terrace 400 feet above the Silverado Trail in Oakville. Since Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle purchased the property in 1982 and began planting vines, this exceptional acreage has continually distinguished itself as the ideal site for producing some of the world’s finest wines, thanks to the perfect convergence of lingering sunlight, cooling marine influence and red volcanic soil.

2012 Collina Dalla Valle Napa Valley Red Wine
2012 was a spectacular vintage in Napa Valley, with mild temperatures, very little precipitation, and an Indian summer that lasted until late October. The fruit on the Dalla Valle estate ripened beautifully, allowing us to harvest over several weeks with optimum flavor, aromatics, and tannin. The 2012 Collina Dalla Valle, produced mainly from younger vines on the estate, highlights the delicacy, precision, and richness of the vintage. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the wine brings forth the best of our terrior—aromas of dried flowers, red raspberries, black currant, gravel, and smoke.
The intention with Collina Dalla Valle is that the wine is accessible upon release. However, for those who are patient, the wine will continue to evolve over the next 15-20 years in the bottle.

2013 Collina Dalla Valle Napa Valley Red Wine
The 2013 vintage, which fell in the second year of an extended drought in California, produced wines with remarkable concentration, aromatic brightness, and a strong sense of place. On our vineyard, which sits four hundred feet above the valley in the eastern hills of Oakville, both the Cabernet Franc and the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes arrived at the winery with an intense character, and great varietal definition. In the winery, the grapes seemed to extract quickly, with loads of color, and ample tannins. Even going straight to barrel the wines seemed fully formed, though with a very firm tannin profile.
Our Collina Dalla Valle is crafted to highlight the character of our special terroir, while being approachable in its youth. The 2013 is a fine example: 58% Cabernet Franc, and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine gives out a floral and spice-rich fragrance immediately. As it opens, the flavor profile is exceedingly generous, with layers of black fruit, gravel, and smoke spreading across the palate. With all its density and richness, the wine benefits from decanting, and continues to open with time in the glass.
The intention with Collina Dalla Valle is the wine is accessible upon release. However, for those who are patient, the wine will continue to evolve over the next 15-20 years in the bottle.

2011 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon
The Dalla Valle wines from the 2011 vintage are an achievement. In many parts of Napa Valley, the season brought challenges, like cool temperatures, early rain, and a relatively late harvest. Our vineyard, perched several hundred feet above the valley, with its western exposure and rocky conditions, performed exceptionally well. The resulting wines exhibit the signature profile that defines Dalla Valle wines: A dark, black fruit character, notes of smoke and gravel, and a heft that makes the taster pause and take notice. These hallmark aromas and textures are delivered on a bed of soft, supple, round tannins. This blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc will certainly age for a decade or more, but even now, in its early days, it is pure pleasure.

2012 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon
2012 was a spectacular vintage in Napa Valley, with mild temperatures, very little precipitation, and an Indian summer that lasted until late October. We began harvesting on the Dalla Valle estate on September 26, precisely in the window for optimum ripeness. We continued at a comfortable, deliberate pace for several weeks, as the weather stayed mild, and the flavors, aromatics, and tannins continued to develop in nearly ideal conditions.
The 2012 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon shows just how good this varietal can be when grown in our very unique terroir. Density and concentration are delivered along with subtlety and nuance, an unusual combination in Napa Valley. The power of the vintage shows through, with intense aromatic notes of black fruits, cedar, and gravel, tightly knit with a strong tannic structure. However, with all that is packed into the wine, there are still many layers that emerge with time in the glass—the tannins show an increasing polish, and the perfume becomes even more effusive and complex—hints that this wine

2013 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2013 vintage, which fell in the second year of an extended drought in California, produced wines with remarkable concentration, aromatic brightness, and a strong sense of place. The Cabernet Sauvignon offering from our Oakville Estate is dazzling in its purity, depth, concentration, and balance. The intensity of this vintage shows immediately in the wine, with its black-purple hue and notable viscosity. The fruit arrived at the winery in pristine condition, a relatively light crop of small, flavor-packed berries. As is the case with all of our wines, the winemaking is decidedly simple: berries are destemmed, the fruit is soaked cold for a number of days. After a slow, controlled fermentation—which retains fruit character and gently extracts tannin—the wine is macerated on the skins until we feel the tannin character is just right. In 2013, it did not take long for us to feel the power and structure of the vintage. The resulting wine went directly to barrels, where it aged for 22 months, before being bottled without fining or filtration. The final blend— Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot—is phenomenally dark in color, and while it is rich in tannin and extract, the texture is silky, polished and long. In its youth, the wine is showing notes of mocha, cassis, black cherry, clay, and smoke. On the palate the fruit and spices are very generous, even at this stage, and these flavors crescendo on the finish, with ample acidity helping lengthen the impression. It is a classic vintage.

2011 Maya
The Dalla Valle vineyard proved its worth in the 2011 vintage, which was quite challenging in many parts of California. At several hundred feet above the valley floor, with a strict western exposure and very rocky soils, the vineyard literally stayed above the fray. The Maya blocks performed particularly well, delivering fruit with ripe tannins, aromatic intensity, and plenty of well-defined muscle. The final blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc. Aromas and flavors of candied cherries, currant, black tea and cardamom come to the surface of this youthful wine. The mid-palate impression is generous, structured, and round, with bright red fruit and Asian spice flavors lingering on a very long finish. This is a wine that, while accessible now, will absolutely age well.

The 2011 Maya is charming, open-knit and fruity with hints of black raspberries, black currants, licorice and a touch of leaf tobacco. Although much lighter than the 2009 and 2010, it is medium-bodied, richly fruity and attractive. It has the potential to last for 10-15 years.

2012 Maya
2012 was a spectacular vintage in Napa Valley, with mild temperatures, very little precipitation, and an Indian summer that lasted until late October. We began harvesting on the Dalla Valle estate on September 26, precisely in the window for optimum ripeness. We continued at a comfortable, deliberate pace for several weeks, as the weather stayed mild, and the flavors, aromatics, and tannins continued to develop in nearly ideal conditions.
The resulting fruit was allowed to macerate cold for nearly a full week before fermentation. This subtle extraction made for amazingly vibrant color, deep fruit character and expression, and added a layer of weight and viscosity that remains in the wine to this day. A relatively long maceration at dryness brought structure and stability to the wine, and we were able to drain directly to barrel and age the wine for 22 months with very little racking. As is our standard practice, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
The 2012 Maya is powerful, dense, but beautifully balanced and precise. Each of the varieties delivers its best attributes—dark brambly fruit and a silky, expansive palate impression from the Cabernet Sauvignon, and exotic spice notes and power from the Cabernet Franc. It is exciting to see such intensity and balance together in one package. The wine certainly benefits from decanting in its current youthful state, but should continue to open and develop over the years in the bottle. This vintage of Maya will certainly age nicely for decades to come.

Dalla Valle was the first winery to demonstrate what heights Cabernet Franc could reach in the valley with their Maya proprietary blend, which averages 50-55% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 Maya is a spectacular offering. I recently had the 1991 (made by Tony Soter) and it is still drinking exceptionally well. In fact, it could still be called an adolescent at 23 years of age. The 2012 Maya is already revealing great complexity with notes of forest floor, licorice, truffles, red and blackcurrants and a hint of graphite. The beautiful aromatics are followed by an equally majestic, full-bodied, multidimensional wine of great class and elegance. This sensational effort should drink well for 25

2013 Maya
The 2013 vintage, which fell in the second year of an extended drought in California, produced wines with remarkable concentration, aromatic brightness, and a strong sense of place. On our vineyard, which sits several hundred feet above the valley in the eastern hills of Oakville, both the Cabernet Franc and the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes arrived at the winery with an intense character, and great varietal definition. In the winery, the grapes seemed to extract quickly, with loads of color, and ample tannins. Even going straight to barrel the wines seemed fully formed, though with a very firm tannin profile.
The 2013 Maya is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%) and Cabernet Franc (43%) from the finest Maya vineyard blocks on our estate. It is our attempt to best capture the special quality of our unique terroir. Both varieties sing in harmony in this vintage. From the Cabernet Franc, notes of black licorice, white flowers, and campfire intermingle with the chorus of aromas and flavors that we love from Cabernet Sauvignon: blackberry and cassis, dark chocolate and savory herbs. The signature textural power and subtle aromatic nuance of eastern Oakville is in full force, bringing notes of burning embers, crushed stones, and sagebrush. The structure and density of this vintage will allow the wine to age for decades, and though it is now only in its infancy, this Maya is forward and muscular.-30 years.

The flagship wine, and one of the first in Napa Valley to emphasize the fabulous potential of Cabernet Franc in specific terroirs, is the 2013 Maya Proprietary Red Wine.
This wine usually spends about 22 months in new oak and normally has anywhere from 45% to as much as 60% Cabernet Franc blended with the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2013 could well be the finest they’ve made to date, and that includes a lot of profound wines. An incredibly complex nose of charcoal embers, blackberry and cassis, some blueberries as well as white flowers, and a touch of forest floor is followed by a full-bodied wine with sweet, well-integrated tannins, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is absolutely remarkable wine – powerful, dense, but at the sane time, precise and elegant. It’s hard to believe, but I think this wine can probably age and improve for 25-40 years. Don’t miss it if you have access to it.
