Greg Brewer's

eget vinprojekt, en portefølje af enkelvinmarks Chardonnayer kaldet Diatom (engelsk for kiselalger). Han havde overvejet muligheden for at lave sin egne vin i nogen tid. Men hans opgaver som vinmager på Brewer-Clifton, en af Santa Rita Hills kulthuse, såvel som hans opgave på nærliggende Melville,  indtil endelig Steve Clifton (som også ejer sit eget label, Palmina) overbeviste ham om at gøre det.

Brewer valgte at fokusere på Chardonnay. "In my heart of hearts, if I had one color to pick, it would be white," griner han.
Hans kærlighed til præcision, fravær af egetræ, forudsat en generel retning for stil med Chardonnay ville han producere vin fra Clos Pepe og Huber vinmarker nær Lompoc, Californien, som begge bidrager til Brewer-Clifton program. Men den overordnede idé stammer fra størrer overvejelser. "Hvad inspirerer mig er åbenhed og minimalisme og ærlig hensigtserklæring - ærlig udtryksfrihed," siger han. "Jeg ønsker at sende et budskab af sted."

Sta. Rita Hills er en blæsende strækning af kystnære bakker, der ligger på den vestlige ende af Santa Ynez Valley, hvis bjergkæder løber øst til vest, i stedet for nord til syd. Havet's virkning på Brewer's vine er dobbelt: Ikke blot det marine indflydelse giver kølige dyrkningsforhold, men jordbunden er også af oceaniske oprindelse. Diatoméjord, ligner pulveriseret kridt, er sammensat af kiselalger er encellede alger forstenet i havbunden millioner af år siden. Fordi disse mikroorganismer giver det vine dyrket i dette område, deres unikke mineralitet, derfor har Greg Brewer valgt at navngive sin etiket efter dem.

Greg Brewer elsker at spille spillet mellem aromaer, sødt, varmt, koldt."   Vinen er gæret helt i rustfrit stål, uden nogen sekundær malolactic gæring. Alt om de vine forbliver ren hvid, hvis du vil. Selv flasken: "Der er hvidt, blød Grays på etiketten, hvidt voks på hætten."

Vinene der kommer er i første omgang fra 2 marker, Babcock og Huber, Clos Pepe blev så hårdt ramt af frost i foråret at der kun blev fremstillet 288 flasker.
Vinene har af både Parker og af Wineentusiast fået mellem 93 -95 points, og er af magasinet Robb Report blevet kåret til ”Best of the Best”

Denne parcel er placeret på toppen af vinmarken, præget af sandet ler og jordler ovenpå en hård skårpe af Monterey lerskifer.

A steep, three acre parcel planted to a Hyde selection of Wente clone by the Dierberg family perched above Drum Canyon Road.

Verbena, lemongrass and honeysuckle aromatics followed by lemon skin and gardenia-like flavors. Very pure, almost crystalline and saline in the mouth.

The one acre parcel from which this wine is conceived is a steep, wind exposed north facing slope planted in a sandy loam soil by the Pepe and Hagen families.

Aromas of lime leaf and mineral followed by flavors of pineapple skin and pink grapefruit. Clean, focused and cleansing on the palate with tremendous persistence.

Hana means flower and shinobu in this context means to memorialize and poignantly reflect upon a loved one or someone important in your life and history. There is both delicacy and tenderness implicit in this kanji which sincerely resonates compassion. Hana is also the technical name for the flower of Nishiwaki City in Hyogo, Japan where Taka and Miyoko were born and where they met in junior high school. This particular property is younger and exudes freshness and life further enhanced by a particular varietal selection which has very high toned, floral tendencies.
Very high pitched floral notes aromatically which usher in flavors reminiscent of narcissus and fresh rain water. On the palate the most delicate and elegant with taut precision and gripping saline qualities.

Hamon makes reference to the ripple which results from dropping a pebble into a still body of water such as a quiet stream or pond. It also means clouds or smoke and is a term used to describe the cloud-like pattern shown on samurai swords where the metal tone changes as a result of the metal forging technique as well as that generation and period of history.
Slightly exotic aromatics of lychee and unripe pear followed by flavors of citrus and wet stones. Comparatively more weight and flesh than the others while still maintaining a stern directive characteristic of the project.

Miya means beautiful night which evokes a very serene and quiet image in a multitude of settings and contexts. Miya Ando is also a very inspirational artist and close friend who sensitively and masterfully creates very emotional work using steel as her primary medium. Her pursuits have largely driven mine for which I will always be grateful as is explained in beautiful night.
Very noble and ethereal aromatics ranging from citrus skin to a fresh, humid brie rind followed by very pure flavors of lime, agave and salt crystals. Tremendous drive and grip in the mouth.
