DuMOL

Originally founded as a family winery in 1996, DuMOL is a winemaker-owned producer of cool climate Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from exceptional vineyards. They are a “vineyard up” winery with a fully integrated approach to winegrowing and winemaking. Working intimately with their many unique sites — some for more than two decades — they strive to present the purest essence of the vineyard and vintage. At 3,630 vines per acre, DuMOL’s estate parcels in the Russian River Valley are among the most densely planted vineyards in North America.
Winemaker, viticulturist and partner, Andy Smith, has been at the helm of DuMOL’s continuous evolution since 1999. He and his close-knit team of three employ winemaking that is classical and intuitive, responsive to the needs of each wine, with the least “technique” necessary. Andy explains, “Each bottling is built in the vineyard. Soil types, microclimates, plant material, maturity levels, how the vines react to the growing conditions, how we react to the vines – there are so many detailed variables. The nuance, the depth and complexity of the fruit that results from those variables, that’s what we aim to achieve and translate to bottle: purity, vibrancy, freshness – intensity without heaviness.”
DuMOL has held the core principle, since inception, to be responsible stewards for their surrounding environment both in their vineyards and in their winemaking. Built in 2008, their winery was the first “green” facility in the Windsor township, 100% solar powered and utilizing a bioreactor system to reduce all waste water impact from winery processing activities to below that of a single-family household. Beyond its environmental considerations, the winery was strategically designed by Andy Smith to optimize the vinification of DuMOL’s many individual wine lots with custom small-lot fermentation tanks to include a Tuscan terracotta Amphora fermenter.
DuMOL crafts 23 wines – 16 vineyard designates and seven appellation blends. Released each spring, fall, and winter, many of these wines are produced in small lots of less than 500 cases each.

2011, DuMOL Lia Viognier Pris: 440,00 DKK
   På lager
Our superb 2010 Lia Viognier was described by customers, critics and trade members alike as the finest Californian example they’d ever tasted. Luckily the 2011 follow up is of similar style and quality, although sadly of much lower production due to the low yields of the vintage. It’s a beautiful wine with great varietal expression and the acid structure to match its natural richness. As a variety Viognier should be rich, sometimes viscous and always intense. This does not mean, however, that it should be soft, blowsy and heavy. In our cool coastal climate we can achieve the breathtaking intensity for which it’s known, but still retain enough acidity for the wine to be long, precise and focused on the palate. We blocked the malolactic fermentation in two of the three source vineyards to retain some ‘greener’ more savory elements that malic acid can bring – ‘the connection to the vine’. You can drink this on release for its exuberant fruit or age it for three or four years to concentrate the fruit core further still and bring even greater deliciousness.

Brilliant pale straw color. Explosively aromatic: spring blossoms, fresh cut grass, honeysuckle, apricot, lemon sherbet and lilies. Wave upon wave of luscious fruit and breezy savory notes cascade on the palate: orange marmalade, white peach, baked apple – all tangy and delicious. Hints of lanolin, quince richness and honey develop. Fresh saline oyster shell notes and tense bright acidity provide balance to the persistent focused finish. Best consumed within four years of release.

2011 is an undeniably great year for coastal Chardonnay, one of our finest ever and one that brings to mind both 2010 and 2005, vintages that are aging effortlessly. Our new release 2011 RRV bottling performs at the historical designate level; such is its perfect balance between deeply pitched natural fruit extract and a backbone of precise live wire acidity. The wine is clean, pure and focused with real breadth across the entire palate but it’s the vein of tightly coiled mouth watering acidity that really keeps it pulsating throughout. It expertly blends leaner stone and riper tropical fruit aromas and flavors and clearly displays the taut freshness of its coastal vineyard origins alongside the broad palate density of this low yielding vintage. Slightly more introverted than its 2010 predecessor, it requires some patience and time in the glass to bring forth the wine’s full texture and multiple layers. If you open it on release give it plenty of air and watch how it unfolds over the evening – the flavors and texture really deepen and expand substantially. Drink between 2013 and 2018.

Brilliant pale straw color. Trademark aromatic intensity: lemon curd and lemon grass, sweet lime and honeydew melon, offset by floral lily perfume, fresh fennel and bay leaf complexity. Opens to baked apple, quince and richer citrus. Immediately fruit driven precise palate: grapefruit, white nectarine and Gravenstein apple. Lively, tense and piercing with sea spray and mint notes. Toasted almond richness and texture build with air. Tangy lime zest dominates the echoing vibrant finish. Serve at no cooler than 55 degrees to allow the wine’s full texture to sing.
2013, DuMOL RRV Chardonnay 375ml Pris: 300,00 DKK
   På lager
2013 is an extremely strong Chardonnay vintage in coastal Sonoma County. At this early stage, the wines remind me of 2005, one of our finest ever set of Chardonnay bottlings. These wines will drink well soon after release but their aging potential is what sets them apart; they have the potential to improve in bottle for five to seven years. The 2013 RRV is a classic DuMOL bottling. Taut, citric and mineral at first, with air it blossoms and unfolds to white peaches, honeyed apple and waxy lanolin richness. It’s an incredibly tangy vibrant wine, richer and broader than the saline, oyster-shell aromas initially suggest. It’s more muscular and focused than the broader 2012 bottling, with higher acidity and greater intricate detail; quite European in style. The wine deepens considerably, but remains perfectly fresh, in a partially opened bottle over a couple of days. Over the next few years I expect this wine will reveal many layers of richness and texture that are currently bound up in its youthful structure.

Focused, piercing aromas of pear, lemon zest and cut grass with a flinty, chalky mineral edge. Crisp apple and lime juice on the palate broadens to ripe melon and white peach. Linear entry expands to layers of ripe stone fruits, almond and nutmeg. Electric acidity brings focus and balance to the persistent smoky finish. Serve at no cooler than 55 degrees to allow the natural texture to come forth.
2015 DuMOL RRV Chardonnay Pris: 480,00 DKK

Zesty lime juice, pear and lychee. Lemongrass, thyme and white blossom with sea spray and green olive savory elements. Lemon curd and citrus oil dominate the fruit forward entry, concentrated and deeply pitched. Intense, deep fruitiness and multi-layered weight. Almond paste and beeswax develop with air. Saline, mineral-infused acidity buffers the round, creamy texture. Pithy, lemon zest finish. Serve at no cooler than 55°F and enjoy between 2017 and 2021.

Our 2015 Chardonnay wines rank alongside the best we have ever grown, vinified and bottled. It’s a truly defining vintage in which our coastal hillside vineyard sites performed to their maximum potential. The wines are dominated by a sense of deep intense oiliness that is a direct product of the year's historically low vine yields.

Our new Russian River Valley offering is packed with mineral precision that gradually deepens to grand scale intensity and broad viscosity. Each time you return to the glass, there’s another nuance, another intricate detail to discover. This vintage we added a remarkable parcel of Dutton Ranch old vines to the blend, amplifying concentration and depth alongside vibrant acidity. It’s classic DuMOL in every respect and offers quality at the single vineyard designate level. The wine is approachable on release, but if you can be patient for even six months, the rewards will multiply, as I expect it will broaden substantially over the next year.
2012, DuMOL "Chloe" Chardonnay - magnum Pris: 1.300,00 DKK
   På lager
The most obviously rich and Californian-styled of our 2012 Chardonnay bottlings, our latest Chloe release is a strong follow up to the stellar 2011 bottling and another great wine in this long line of vintages stretching back to 2000. As our warmest Chardonnay site, it’s only correct that this should be our deepest wine and the designate Chardonnay to drink first – for its dramatic opulence and flavor impact. Sometimes too much of a good thing is just enough after all. What’s important though is that richness and texture need not automatically come at the expense of vibrancy or freshness, and this wine holds true to that. There’s always a strong sense of dynamic energy and flickering acidity to the wine that prevents it becoming heavy or too concentrated and unbalanced. There’s a great deal of old vine concentration and layered depth here but it’s intrinsically a finely-tuned pulsating, shimmering wine.

Aromatically fruit-forward with ripe peach, cantaloupe, lemon curd and orange marmalade. Floral lilies, toasted almonds and fennel complexity. Underlying savory cut grass character mixes with richer nectar and pollen notes. Fruit dominant palate – tangy citrus marmalade, quite oily and viscous but always vibrant. Nectarine richness but offset by sea spray and olive elements. Evolves nicely in the glass. Firms up and lengthens. Floral notes run throughout the wine, apple blossom and iodine, quinine complexity. Good bright acidity to finish. Drink between 2014 and 2019.
2013, DuMOL clare Chardonnay - 96 RP Pris: 600,00 DKK
   På lager
From the exact same vines as its 2012 stable mate, but a very different wine and a pure reflection of this precise, structured season. The wine has great natural density and obvious power but it’s delivered in a manner that emphasizes clarity and precision, to an extent that’s rare in any chardonnay. It’s a wine of complementary contrasts: plush yet angular, broad but crisp, multi-layered yet dynamic and saline. The iodine/quinine complexity these mature vines deliver is on full display and the wine has a tannic persistence on the finish that reminds me of the 2004 Clare vintage, another early-ripening season. It’s rare for us to actually bottle all the wine we make each year as we tend to declassify individual barrels prior to blending, but in 2013 we made thirty-nine barrels of Hyde Chardonnay and each one is present in this final blend. Don’t miss this spectacular young chardonnay. It sets a new standard for us – the wine of the vintage.

Spicy savory aromas: juniper, wild sage and fennel before fruit arrives. Fresh crunchy apple, stone fruits, apricot and melon. Richness builds but always a slate, sea shell edge. Intense lemon/lime oil palate, white pepper then richer oatmeal and almond paste. Coursing mineral vein from start to finish. Mid-palate opens up with obviously depth and power but always tense, energetic structure and long lingering persistent acidity. Drink between 2016 and 2021.

Our special 3.5-acre parcel of vines at Hyde Vineyard is now in its prime production/quality window at twenty two years of age. It’s among the very earliest ripening blocks at the vineyard, which typically means the vines are particularly well-balanced, in harmonious equilibrium with their environment. Parcels such as this always seem to produce the finest most evocative wines. It’s a more fruit-driven wine than the epically-mineral 2013 bottling, but you’ll find it’s still drenched in river pebble intensity and saline/quinine freshness. The crop was healthy this year so we made a very strict cellar selection, after twelve month’s barrel aging, ultimately bottling only the most expressive barrels, sixty-three percent of the total production. I expect this will age longer than anyone has the patience for, between ten and twelve years. When a young wine tastes so good as this…why wait? Serve close to room temperature.

Brilliant pale straw color with a green tinge. Explosive aromatics: lemon zest, white nectarine, geranium, spearmint, thyme and oyster shell. Great clarity and direct focus. Deep precise flavors. Mineral, stream bed and crisp apple. Dry, tangy and pulsating. Really opens up as it grows in the glass. Oatmeal and almond paste, body and richness. Weighty, broad deep savory finish, rising grapefruit character. Incredibly dynamic wine – mineral, tense and deep with building fruit richness. A livewire with long cellaring potential.
2013, DuMOL RRV Pinot Noir 375ml Pris: 350,00 DKK
   På lager
If we take the deep fruitiness of 2012 and blend it with the cool fragrance of 2011, you have an approximation of how I regard our 2013 Pinot wines. It’s a vintage that tends to the elegant savory side of the variety in coastal Sonoma, with wonderful elevated aromatic complexity. Like any great wine our 2013 RRV Pinot takes time to open up in the glass. Complexity builds as air goes to work on the individual elements, gradually bringing the whole wine into focus. The wine progresses through multiple stages so that each time you return to the glass, there’s something new to discover. Initially bright, juicy and red-fruited, as the wine continues to open, darker notes emerge and blend with the varied vineyard-driven non-fruit components. The bottle’s final glass is opulent, layered and full-flavored yet always fresh and vibrant. I strongly suggest you decant the wine for an hour in its youth and estimate the wine is a good candidate for seven to ten years of improvement in bottle.

Classic coastal hi-toned Pinot aromas: Bing cherry, fresh strawberry jam, rose petal, complex grassy/herbal elements, anise and evergreen. Real beauty to the wine, subtle and tightly coiled. Expands, darkens and deepens in the glass – violet, black tea and black cherry. Volume builds with layers of flavor and texture. Crisp apple skin finish with lingering bergamot complexity.
2015, DuMOL RRV Pinot Noir magnum Pris: 1.350,00 DKK
   På lager
Beautifully fragrant, aromatic Pinot: cranberry, pomegranate, fresh raspberry and classic black cherry. Licorice, rose petal, thyme and graphite complexity, freshly-turned earth. Sweet fruit entry, broad rich and tactile but remains lively and supple. Rhubarb compote, darker cassis, baked plum — deep layered intensity. Subtle red-apple-skin tannins and lingering anise perfume. Persistent resonating finish. Drink between late-2017 and 2024.

Slightly brighter and livelier than its show-stopping 2014 predecessor, the wine offers lovely depth of flavor and balanced concentration, all wrapped up in a brilliantly vibrant attention-grabbing package. I love how the aromatic purity carries fully through to the palate — intense, focused and detailed.

As with all our Pinots from the vintage, there's a real fruit compote character and natural density to the wine — layered, succulent and deep. A complex loamy-woodsy note adds extra sweetness and depth. The fresh acidity makes the wine stand upright: poised, punchy and youthfully dynamic. Stylistically, it's a classic Green Valley hillside site-driven wine, quite distinct from the warmer parts of the Russian River Valley, and filled with soulful nuance. I expect this will age beautifully in bottle, so no hurry to drink it; give it some time to unfold through 2017 and beyond.
2014, DuMOL "finn" Pinot Noir Pris: 780,00 DKK
   På lager
Here we have the wine of the vintage, one of the finest single wines we’ve ever bottled, and a DuMOL classic in the making. I expect to be enjoying this one for the next 12+ years. I compare it most closely to our 2002 Finn bottling that was singing at Christmas 2015 from a perfectly-stored 3-liter bottle. There’s a completeness to this wine that is hard to achieve in any but the finest vintages, and a level of pedigree and effortless quality that is rarely matched. In no way, however, is this a ‘big’ wine – that’s not its raison d’etre. Rather, it’s a wine of polish, breed and classical balance, with a precision of flavor and purity of western Russian River character that’s the essence and focus of our work here. It’s a blend of vines grown on shallow marine sandstone and richer clay-based soils and that’s reflected in its multi-faceted character – it’s complete and integrated, elegant and fine, detailed and deep. I recommend you buy a magnum and try to employ some degree of patience. The rewards will be many. Do not miss out. Deep complex multi-dimensional aromas. Soaring red and black fruits. Truffle, tangy orange peel, graphite, fresh soil and woodsy notes. Beautiful fruit purity on entry. Thrilling, electric intensity. Spice cake, nutmeg and beetroot complexity. Buoyant volume and real depth of flavor. Long silky tannins, bright acidity and roasted malt, mushroom and charcoal finishing nuances. A dynamic wine of unmatched clarity, depth of flavor and length of delivery.
2014, DuMOL "estate" Pinot Noir Pris: 780,00 DKK
   På lager
Fittingly our most complex pinot of the vintage comes from our own high-density Estate vineyard that we farm ourselves. This wine delivers a myriad of complex elements along the whole arc of the wine – detailed, multi-faceted and intriguing – a distillation of the site itself in this purest of vintages. A thought-provoking and intellectual wine, not a simple sipper, but definitely full of pleasure – it unfolds gradually to a rising crescendo finish of succulent red and black fruits, dried herbs, sweet soil and tangy minerals. Uncommonly compelling pinot, really mouthwatering and vibrant. The intricate dimensions draw you back in for another sip, something new to discover. At ten years of age these vines have entered early maturity and one senses the wine’s increasing concentration and growing complexity with each passing year. There’s outstanding aging potential here, 10-12 years will be no problem in a cold cellar. While it’s not as showy as Ryan or Finn, all the wine’s intricate, kaleidoscopic details really come into harmony on the long pulsating finish.

Brilliance in the glass. Cranberry, pomegranate, rhubarb and black raspberry fruit. Bay laurel, graphite and tarragon complexity. Underbrushy and woodsy, edgy and intriguing. Savory entry, red currant and sassafras, Rainier cherry and dark cassis. Broad across the palate, density and weight. Clove, lavender and forest floor. Balances succulence and structure. Youthful acidity and fresh minerals extend the finish. Slower to open. This one will age.

Really fascinating, commanding pinot – a beautiful mix of red and black fruits, savory elements and chewy tannins.
2013, DuMOL "Jack Roberts Run" Syrah Pris: 660,00 DKK
   På lager
This is without question our most improved individual bottling and a wonderful follow up to the delicious 2012 that won many converts to coastal Syrah. By harvesting the vineyard at slightly lower grape maturity and adding a substantial portion of whole clusters to the fermentation, we are really seeing the special character and great potential of this mature vineyard shine like never before. The wine is incredibly complex aromatically with lovely interplay between its fruit purity and the wilder, more savory side of Syrah. The palate gives a swirling, constantly-changing layered impression with ripe wild berry fruit typical of sandy soil vineyards and the savory, complex herbal notes that these old clones and whole cluster fermentation provide. A dash of Viognier in the fermenter kicks up the aromatic detail adding fruit succulence and an airy floral edge. I really like the way the wine expands impressively towards its finish, building subtly to a crescendo of blue, black and purple fruits with plum skin and dark olive tapenade complexity. One of the wines of the vintage.

Beautiful aromatic fruit purity: boysenberry, blackberry and huckleberry then complex secondary characters, graphite, violets, licorice and game. A myriad of fragrant layered aromas, fresh and breezy but always a darker brooding edge. Kaleidoscopic palate – briary fruit, spicy tapenade notes, inner mouth lilac perfume, wild sage and woodsy complexity. Texture builds alongside prominent structure. Ripe fruit absorbs the wine’s firmness. Finishes layered, long and savory. Decant in its youth and drink between 2016 and 2023.
2013, DuMOL "Eddies Patch" Syrah Pris: 720,00 DKK
   På lager
There’s a very strong terroir element to our 2013 Eddie’s Patch Syrah – it’s foremost a wine of site rather than Californian sunshine. It shows a prominent iron-like, ferrous/mineral element that is extremely complex and appealing and quite evocative of these deep red, eroded upland soils. At the same time though it’s quite fine-boned with pinpoint detail and clarity of aroma and flavor. A wine of complementary contrasts – bright and lively yet dark in character, supple mid-palate but firmly structured, lovely balance between richness and length – quite a linear wine. The wine dances along the palate and has poise and elegance despite its inherent power. The youthful structure is front and center at the moment so a long decant is best. The wine becomes penetrating and intense as it opens up in the glass with all manner of complex secondary flavors – black tea, cocoa, grilled meat and lavender but always with a vibrant energetic edge, never heavy or clumsy.

Brilliant purple color in the glass. Hi-toned aromatics combine overt fruit with strong savory notes. Blue and black fruits – ripe and lush, graphite and minerals, bay leaf, white and black pepper, strong iron-like quality. Lovely fruit purity, focused, precise long flavors, lots of detail. Deep plum and cherry fruit but always zesty and mouthwatering. Rising acidity and good tannin definition. Decant in its youth and drink between mid-2016 and 2025.
2014, DuMOL Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Pris: 820,00 DKK
   På lager
Opaque dark purple color. Deep, pure, dark aromas: cassis, blackberry and plum. Intensely floral with savory complexity: sage, pine needle, cedar and sweet tobacco. Beautifully integrated wine, layered and textured with a long sleek flavor delivery along the entire arc of the palate. Ripe blue and black fruits, building density, sweet chewy tannins with mineral freshness on the lively supple finish. Lingering licorice, floral gravelly lift. Demonstrating the gorgeous purity that is the hallmark of this elegant vintage, our 2014 Napa Cabernet fits perfectly into the DuMOL stylistic playbook. It’s a blend of two special vineyards that complement each other effortlessly. Ballard, planted in iron-rich red volcanic soils at 1,800 feet atop Spring Mountain, is dense and chewy with complex earth and herb aromas, dark black fruits and prominent structure. Rewa, planted on shallow rocky white volcanic ash in the cool Coombsville district, is exotically floral, richly textured with layered suppleness. A beautifully seamless combination. The wine is lavishly aromatic – simultaneously exotic and complex – and these characters never fade, even after three days from a partial bottle. The wine’s weight and density build gradually as it opens in the glass so that rich layers of blackberry jam fruit take hold and absorb the wine’s solid structure. But at all times the wine retains its cool climate mineral streak – dark, fresh and lively with pinpoint focus and livewire intensity. Really delicious.
