Larkmead Vineyards History
1875 - Lillie ‘Firebelle’ Hitchcock Coit names her home ‘Larkmead’, (Coit Tower in S.F. named after her.)
1885 - St. Helena Star makes the first reference to a small wooden winery located at the Larkmead rail station as “Larkmead Cellar.”
1906 - The wood winery is expanded to a larger, intimidating stone structure by F. Salmina & Co.
1937 - Under F. Salmina & Co. Larkmead offered varietal wines including a Cabernet and Zinfandel that took two “firsts” at the California State Fair; in the same year received a Diplome d’Honneur along with Beringer and Inglenook at the Paris Exposition.
1943 - The Napa Valley Vintners Association was formed by seven wineries - Beaulieu, Inglenook, Louis Martini, Mondavi, Napa Wine Co., Napa Valley Co-op and Larkmead. (There are now 350 active members.)
1948 - Kate Baker’s father, Larry Solari, buys Larkmead winery and surrounding vineyards.
1958 - Due to health reasons, Solari sells the winery but keeps the vineyards.
1990’s – Larkmead begins to make wine again under the direction of Paul Hobbs and Andy Smith. Andy takes complete control in 1999.
2006 - One hundred years after the stone Larkmead winery was built, a new Larkmead winery and tasting room are completed.
2008 - Andy Smith celebrates his 10th harvest with Larkmead with Robert Parker citing him as one of the “world’s great wine consultants.” Larkmead Vineyards celebrates its 125th Harvest.
Also: From Bottled Poetry by James T. Lapsley: Andre Tchelistcheff arrived in Napa in 1938, he recalled “four outstanding wine processing plants: Inglenook, Beaulieu, Larkmead and Beringer.” Robert Mondavi echoed Tchelistcheff’s sentiments by stating he was, “tremendously impressed [with] the big four of the California wine industry.”
Today: Larkmead has approximately 110 acres under vine of which Cabernet is 60%, Merlot is 20% and the rest in Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and a small patch of 120 year old Tocai Fruilano. As growers, Larkmead has contracts with some well known vintners such as Cakebread, Duckhorn, Merryvale and Chaim (Covenant), amongst others.
As vintners, all Larkmead wines are 100% estate grown. |
"Composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (nearly 4,000 cases produced) is a great buy for a world-class Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It exhibits a dense purple color, notes of charcoal, creme de cassis, graphite, and forest floor, and a ripe, opulently fruity, rich, full-bodied style. Its endearing silkiness, multi-dimensions, and mature, sweet tannins suggest it has two decades of life ahead of it. One of Napa Valley’s finest estates, and one that is not as appreciated as it should be, Larkmead fashions top-flight wines that should evolve for 15-25 years or more. Scotsman Andy Smith is the consulting winemaker for this estate, which is located off the valley floor just north of St. Helena. The 2007s are strong follow-ups to Larkmead’s terrific 2005s and 2006s. As a historical note, the 2009s will be the 114th vintage this iconic estate has produced." 94+ Points, Robert Parker

"Deep ruby red-purple color. Striking aromatic profile: currant, cedar, earth, slate and cassis dominate with an edge of menthol and dried herb. As the wine opens floral and lead pencil notes emerge. The palate is immediately dynamic and penetrating with an energy that is unmistakably Larkmead. Pure blackcurrant and graphite minerality lead the way with notes of plum, cocoa and sweet mint. A creamy mid-palate is offset by youthfully intense tannins that absorb the wine's viscosity and provide great thrust and focus to its finish. Lovely fresh acidity intensifies the gravelly-stony aftertaste.
Decant for an hour in its first couple of years and drink between release and 2020.
Just as 2007 was a vintage in which it was hard to make wines that were anything less than memorable; so 2008 was one where obvious quality had to be earned. Fortunately our world class Estate vineyard performed with its usual self-assuredness. Low yields brought a sense of natural power and density to the wine, but our decision to harvest on the early side, has given this wine great authority of flavor along with a freshness and suppleness that are irresistible.
This is unequivocally a wine of both origin and originality with a real sense of vineyard personality, class and style. It combines textural viscosity with structural tautness and an element of power held in reserve that will allow it to gradually unfold with 10 to 12 years in the cellar. As a single Estate wine it is about as far removed from generic, modern super-ripe Napa Cabernet as it's possible to imagine and tips its hat toward Bordeaux with its dominant gravelly, cedary character and predominant elegance. It impresses with its pure vineyard expression rather than extravagant fruit sweetness or fundamental size and as such is reminiscent of classic Napa Cabernet from the 1970s and 80s. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do."

"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals a Medoc-like nose of cedarwood, damp earth, black currants and hints of bay leaf and unsmoked cigar tobacco. Opulence, purity and density combined with a thick, full-bodied mouthfeel and a superb finish all suggest a wine that can be drunk now or cellared for two decades." |
