Wineenthusiast top 100 2009
97 Melville 2007 Carrie’s Pinot Noir
(Sta. Rita Hills); $52. Combines a delicate,
floral lightness with a potent intricacy to
produce a wine of vast intellectual interest. Dry
and somewhat tannic, and crisp in tangy acidity,
this small-production Pinot features tiers of
tart red cherries, rosehip tea, cola, mint, lavender,
anise and pepper, edged with the honeyed
sweetness of smoky, glazed oak. A tremendous
achievement, and the wine of the vintage.

Named in honor of Ron Melville’s mother, Verna’s vineyard in Los Alamos is planted to seven acres of viognier on sandy and deficient soils and is a combination of Alban selection and clone 1. Slightly warmer and windier then our Sta. Rita Hills property, this estate has proven well-suited for growing this aromatic varietal. The fruit was gently pressed, transferred to neutral barrel and stainless steel, cold-fermented at 45°F for three months and prepared for bottling in March. Cold fermentation, neutral oak, stainless steel and the avoidance of malo-lactic fermentation were employed to retain the wine’s freshness and exotic expressions.
Tasting Notes: Pure exotic expressions of white currant, passion fruit, prickly pear and wild flowers mix with refreshing hints of lime water, pea tendril and citrus blossom. Exuding from the glass is also a decadent aromatic collection reminiscent of rock candy, honey oil and magnolia. The mouthfeel has great presence weaving all these nuances together finishing with strong ample persistence and delicate restraint.

Comprised of dijonnaise clones 114 and 115, Carrie’s 4.9 acres sits on the mesa next to the Terraces’ sections with only room for a tractor separating the two blocks. Carrie’s has several feet of dense clay and slightly less wind pressure than its sister block Terraces. Also enhancing the extremity of this site is the gravitational pull on the three exposed sides which forces the roots to struggle searching deeper for sustenance. The vines from Carrie’s consistently produce a juxtaposition: on one hand the fruit is richly concentrated and focused, while on the other, it expresses subtlety and finesse. The fruit was fermented in small (1.5 ton) open-top fermenters. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2 + weeks of fermentation and 1 + week extended maceration.) From the press, the wine was transferred directly into neutral barrel where it remained sur lie with no sulfur until April, when it was gently racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in July. 33% stem inclusion. Neutral oak. Yields at 2.3 lbs./plant (2.1 tons/acre).
Tasting Notes: More specific than its sibling Terraces, this wine has a dark core of black nuances of raspberry, cherry, chocolate, coffee bean and soy that mix with lifted prettier tones of sage, chamomile tea and lavender. There is also an intoxicating spice aroma of maple, miso, filberts, sea salt and shortbread. The wine is brawnier and chalkier than the Terraces and envelopes your entire palate finishing both savory and with significant time.

From the west side of our estate, the three undulating slopes of Terraces lie completely exposed to the elements facing severe wind pressure, several sun exposures and challenging drainage issues. This 4.9 acre block is planted on clay loam and limestone soils wrapping 120° around Carrie’s block. Five clones: Swan, Mount Eden, 115, 667 and 777, form a unique combination of old California Selections and newer dijonnaise clonal material. This site’s soils, elevation, aspect and clonal diversity weave thematically through this wine creating an array of diverging and intriguing expressions. The fruit was fermented in small (1.5 ton) open-top fermenters. Total skin and stem contact averaged 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2+ weeks of fermentation and 1+ week extended maceration.) From the press, the wine was transferred directly into neutral barrel where it remained sur lie with no sulfur until April, when it was gently racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in December. 25% stem inclusion. Neutral oak. Yields at 2 lbs./plant (1.8 tons/acre)
Tasting Notes: An intense collection of concentrated blue and red fruit aromatics of blueberry and cherry intermix with floral components of white sage, violets and lilies. An intriguing composition of black tea, persimmon, pit fruit and drift wood interweaves throughout this bouquet. The palate impression is dense and round, while also remaining light, and fleshes out this complexity leaving the mouthfeel satiated for an extended period.
