I 420 meters højde, på det højeste bjerg i det vestlige Pritchard Hill, med den mest fantastiske udsigt over Napa Valley, vil du finde en lille og meget elegant ejendom - Ovid Vineyards. Dette er en af de mest spændende af de nye vinerier i Napa Valley. Det er grundlagt og ejet af softwareprogramøren og forretningspartnerne Mark Nelson og Dana Johnson. De 6,10 hektar vinstokke blev plantet på den barske jomfruelige land af den velkendte viticulturist David Abreu, og den berømte winemaker Andy Erickson(Screaming Eagle) i 2000. Den første høst var 2005, og med ultralav udbytte, udover deres estate Cab laver de også små partier af såkaldte Experiment vine, i 2008 var deres produktion på kun 600 kasser.
Consulting winemaker er Michel Rolland.
Årgang 2005 som var deres første årgang var udsolgt til mailinglistekunder inden den blev frigivet.

This operation has elicited considerable acclaim, given the talent involved. First of all is the terroir, a stunning location high on Pritchard Hill, a neighborhood filled with Napa superstars, such as Colgin, Bryant Family, Continuum, David Arthur, and Del Dotto. Add to that the level of talent – winemaker Andy Erickson, consultant Michel Rolland, viticulturalist David Abreu – and the result is essentially a think-tank of world-class quality. Yields are tiny (15 acres in vine), and the emphasis here is on putting together a blend with a high dosage of Cabernet Franc in the final assemblage. For that reason, the wines probably need slightly more time to strut their stuff. It has been my experience that Cabernet Franc needs several years to show complexity aromatically and put on weight in the bottle.

 The 2007 Proprietary Red (47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot) possesses a dense purple color as well as glorious aromas of black and red fruits, smoke, camphor, subtle wood, and mountain flowers. Dense, ripe, and full-bodied, with velvety tannins, but no aggressiveness, this brilliantly constructed 2007 is already appealing and exuberant. It should drink nicely for 15-20 years.
This is my first look at the wines of Ovid, another luxury oriented project from one of my favorite sites in Napa Valley, Pritchard Hill. A trifecta of talent, winemaker Andy Erickson, consultant Michel Rolland, and viticultural manager David Abreu are behind the wines. There are 15 acres in vine, so Ovid, while small, is not microscopic. What is so striking about these three cuvees is their opulence, silkiness, purity, and burgeoning complexity. I had heard terrific things about Ovid, and this trio lived up to my lofty expectations. |

E2.7.jpg "Klik for stort billede") Experiment A2.7 is a blend of entirely concrete-fermented lots aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. The result is a multilayered wine with a core of red fruits and a long exotic spice finish. A total of 434 cases of the 2007 Experiment A2.7 were produced and is named in honor of Ovid’s two winemakers, Andy Erickson and Austin Peterson.
“We utilize only the best of what the vineyard can produce, thus offering distinctive, highly sought-after, estate-grown wines,” said Peterson. “I love the current release of our Experiment A2.7 because it show the breadth of wine that this vineyard is able to produce.” Kommer til september |

“E 0.4 is a blend of 56.19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.38% Cabernet Franc, 15.24% Merlot, and 16.19% Petit Verdot and is showing great polish and finesse….The 2004 E 0.4 Experiment has developed a sophisticated alluring charm as it moves from its youth to a period of distinction. While holding strong to its core of cassis, blackberry and currant fruit character, the wine has developed aromatic notes of frankincense, cedar and licorice. The tannins are quite silky, but the wine has ample structure, a dense mid-palate, and a long, intense finish. Enjoy it now or cellar it for up to 10 years.
