Ovid

Ovid [Publius Ovidius Naso] was a Roman poet who lived from 43 BC – 17 AD.  His most famous work, Metamorphoses, is a poetic retelling of the Greek myths, celebrating the themes of transformation and change.

Since winemaking is about transformation from grapes to something more sublime, that forms one connection.  Our admiration for the art and culture of the Romans, who had so much figured out so long ago, forms another.  The works of Ovid, rich and timely yet steeped in tradition, continue to speak to us.

We aim to embody our classical theme in everything we do.  We value long-lasting relationships and sustainable methods in farming and winemaking, all with the goal of creating a wine estate that will endure and flourish.

2016 white experiment w3.6
Our repertoire continues to expand with these white wines—an indulgence of our curiosity. In addition to the small lots of grapes we source from Sonoma, Napa and Calaveras counties, we have added tiny quantities of Vermentino and Grenache Blanc to the mix. These are coming from a vineyard in the Sierra Foothills located at 1,400 feet. The soils there are free draining sand over tumbled giant chunks of granite. Vermentino brings some texture and fresh green apple and vibrant zest of citrus to the blend, while Grenache Blanc adds peach, yellow apple and roundness.
When blended with the Sauvignon Blanc, Albarino, Viognier and Roussanne, this Experiment wine exudes notes of peach, lemon blossom, papaya, passion fruit, tangerine, custard, honey suckle, wisteria and macadamia nut. It is a full-throated chorus on the palate with lively acid and joy.

The 2008 Ovid (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) is a slightly more restrained and marginally lighter version of the 2007. Still, it is a delicious, full-throttle, multi-dimensional wine, with loads of red, blue and black fruits and hints of camphor and graphite as well as forest floor notes in a medium-bodied, restrained, but impressively authoritative style to drink over the next 15 or more years.

2013, Ovid Proprietary Pritchard Hill. Pris: 2.800,00 DKK

The 2013 Proprietary Red, a slightly different blend from the 2012 of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc, is a much smaller production of 350 cases. This wine, which ratchets up the level of intensity, has an opaque purple color and a beautiful nose of blackberry, blueberry and cassis as well as hints of espresso, white flowers, and subtle background toast. The wine hits the palate with a cascade of gorgeous fruit, sweet tannin, great delineation and acidity, and a long, velvety, voluptuously textured mouthfeel. This big, inky, thick, juicy wine should age beautifully for 25-30 years.

2014 was the third consecutive year of DROUGHT in Napa Valley. We received almost no rain in all of 2013 and LITTLE RAIN in 2014 until the storms in February. They provided a bit of respite and relief but were immediately followed by unusually WARM temperatures that ushered in an early bud break. A warm, dry growing season followed until August, when temperatures rose just a bit – a HARBINGER of good things to come. Harvest began early and went quickly. Ours started on September 4th and ended in an exuberant flurry on the 24th, just a day before a locally heavy rain and hailstorm.
The resulting 2014 Ovid Napa Valley wine shares many characteristics with OVID wines from the previous two DROUGHT VINTAGES. It is a wine possessing both the PROFOUND HEFT and tremendous focus of the 2013 vintage. And it offers dense aromatics of MULBERRY, dark chocolate, blackberry and tobacco that literally SPRING from the glass – reminiscent of the vintage two years prior. SUNSHINE defined all three of these vintages and we hope you can taste that radiant joy in this RICH and resonant
2013, Ovid Hexameter Pris: 3.000,00 DKK

HEXAMETER is the meter that OVID used in his GREATEST POEM: Metamorphoses. This form of verse is uniquely suited to the telling of long & INSPIRING tales that stand the test of time. We aim to recreate these qualities in the HEXAMETER wine, featuring our Pritchard Hill estate’s MOST PROFOUND and COMPELLING Cabernet Franc as its core. We only make HEXAMETER in some years –
when the vines and STARS ALIGN.
2013 was a year of REMARKABLE ALIGNMENT – with an early and dry budbreak and set, and a warm, seamless growing season. The 2013 harvest was IMPECCABLE too -- yielding expressive & utterly ripe fruit from each grape varietal in our vineyard.
This RARE and beautiful alignment is readily apparent in the opulent and expressive 2013 HEXAMETER wine. It features nearly 65% of the captivating Cabernet Franc of this vintage INTERWOVEN with lush Cabernet Sauvignon and silken Merlot. Notes of vibrant pomegranate, forest floor, BLACKBERRIES & blueberries combine with touches of violet, SAGE and mocha to create this SUMPTUOUS wine with exceptional balance.

Their exercise with a Cabernet Franc-dominated wine, the 2013 Hexameter (a 500-case blend of 64% Cabernet Franc, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot) is pushing perfection. Its beautiful notes of acacia flowers, forest floor, blackberries and blueberries interwoven with touches of barrique, licorice and spice are followed by an even more intense and complex palate with silky, ripe tannins, opulent, full-bodied texture, and beautiful purity. A “wow” wine in so many different aspects, this multi-dimensional classic should age beautifully for 20 or more years.

When I smell and taste Hexameter, I am immediately brought back to the peak
of the growing season. The smell of the red dust rising as we pull out yet another rock.
The sweetness &depth of the fruit as we approach harvest and the savory aromatics of all that surrounds the vineyard–wild sage, dry grasses, molasses & licorice root from the brush. There is a generosity of texture in our Hexameter wines that I feel reflects
the thought, energy, and effort put into growing & making them.
Austin Peterson, WINEMAKER

The 2014 HEXAMETER wine is OPULENT & ROBUST with vibrant fruit, reflecting its early and generous growing season. It features 51% of the compelling Cabernet Franc of this vintage, interwoven with 37% lush Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% elegant Merlot. Notes of fresh boysenberry, black raspberry, & rhubarb pie combine with violet candy, sage and cardamom to create a bold wine with a great sense of balance.

2015 red experiment p5.5
This Experiment is a furtherance of the thesis explored with the 2014 Experiment H3.4. With the H3.4 we wanted to investigate what would happen if we used larger 300L barrels rather than the standard 225L. Would the wines be fresher? Would they offer greater purity? What if we went even bigger?
For the 2015 Experiment P5.5, we decided to age the wines in the standard 225L barrels for the first year and then blend and transfer the wines to 500L puncheons for the second year. The resulting wine is the best of both worlds. It has the freshness and vibrancy that we get from the larger formats while maintaining the integration and evolution of the smaller barrels.
Dense and lush, this wine exhibits notes of blackberry, cola, dark cherry, plum, dried red tobacco, leather, pen ink, cocoa, orange rind and caramel. The burnished palate is fresh and lively, convincingly expressing the intrigue of this unconventional approach.
