Corison

Corison Winery is a small family farm producing delicious Cabernet Sauvignons that speak of place. Over three decades, Cathy Corison and William Martin have built a special home to celebrate the best of our little corner of the world, benchland in the heart of the Napa Valley. Known for power and elegance, Corison wines are balanced to grace the table and are recognized throughout the world for their longevity and consistency.

Founded in 1987
In 1987, Cathy Corison began to purchase great Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from prime benchland vineyards between Rutherford and St. Helena, intent on making powerful and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon that speaks of place. These well-drained alluvial soils had a long history of producing balanced, age-worthy, world-class wines, reaching back to the late 19th century. In her early years everything was done with smoke and mirrors, using purchased fruit and space in others' wineries.

In 1995, with the purchase of Kronos Vineyard, a property that had been a farm for over a century, there was finally an estate vineyard and a place to build a winery. In the spring of 1999 we broke ground to build our stately Victorian-style winery barn, designed by Cathy's husband, William Martin. Our second estate vineyard, Sunbasket, a stone's throw from the winery, was purchased in 2015 after sourcing it for over 25 years.

The 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Cathy Corison is a completely compelling wine, immediately impressing with its striking purity and elegant personality. As this slowly unwinds it begins to release gorgeous aromas of ripe currants and fresh dark fruits, which are woven together with graphite, pencil shavings, violets, sweet Asian spices and minerals all coming together and soaring from the glass. This beautifully textured, polished Cabernet continues to impress with its remarkable balance, wonderful precision and outstanding depth as it makes a seamless transition into the long, velvety finish. Cathy Corison managed to capture all the ripeness from the vintage, while at the same time keeping this wine well-tailored and extremely classy. Even at this infinite stage the 2012 already shows a great deal of appealing characteristics, however this is a wine which will be long-lived, capable of lasting decades and will only improve over time. Overall, a simply tremendous effort from Cathy Corison. (Best 2017-2036) - May, 2015 (JD)

The 2013 is another remarkable wine to add to the impressive list of amazing Napa Valley Cabernet from Cathy Corison. This instantly opens with irresistible aromas of fresh ripe blackberries and currants woven together with loads of intense violets and graphite, along with hints of dried sage and pencil shavings. On the palate this shows remarkable concentration and depth, yet remains beautifully balanced and focused with wonderful purity through the velvety, layered finish. This improves with each second in the glass and I only expect this to continue to evolve gracefully for many years to come. The 2013 certainly has a wonderful future in store. This understated, elegant study in the variety opens in beguiling aromas of floral rose before opening into a finely made, structured and gracefully constructed wine that's fully in balance. Leather, black cherry and dark chocolate highlight a midpalate of finely polished, tamed tannin and integrated oak. This is delightfully enjoyable now, but can stand up to aging; enjoy best 2020–2030.

The bouquet is classic, wafting from the glass in a complex and very classy blend of black cherries, sweet dark berries, Cuban cigar wrapper, Rutherford dust, a deft framing of cedary oak and just a hint of eucalyptus in the upper register. On the palate the wine is extremely pure and focused, full-bodied and beautifully bound up in its sophisticated structural chassis, with a gorgeous core of fruit, great soil signature, ripe, buried tannins and superb length and grip on the seamlessly balanced finish. This is stunning juice… John Gilman, July-August 2019, Issue #82Wine Enthusiast Magazine

…serious wine, complex and integrated, with intriguing aspects of leather, earth and truffle. Soft and supple, it shows a spiciness of clove and tart red raspberry and cassis, deliciously memorable in every way.September 2019VINOUS - explore all things wine

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is bold, luscious and gracious, all in the mid-weight style that is such a signature of Cathy Corison's Cabernets. Floral overtones add freshness to this super-expressive Cabernet Sauvignon. Rose petal, lavender, licorice, mint and dark cherry fruit get an extra kick of vibrancy from the natural brightness of the year. What a gorgeous wine this is.Antonio Galloni, Dec 2018Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine

...showing a certain, understated sense of complexity to its lightly perfumed aromas of currants, sweet oak and loam, this medium-full-bodied effort steers away from sinewy strength and forceful ripeness, and it shows a lighter hand throughout. It is a Cabernet that aims for refinement above all else, and, echoing its like-minded cellarmate from the Sunbasket Vineyard, it can be enjoyed in its youth but is balanced to keep comfortably for a good many years.August 2019Wine Spectator

Fresh in feel, with red currant, raspberry and damson plum fruit, laced with floral hints and backed by a subtle mineral edge on the finish. Offers a pure, streamlined character. Well done. Drink now through 2033. 2,200 cases made.JM, December 2019JancisRobinson.com

Medium-deep ruby colour. Vibrant aromas of red and black cherries, fresh blackcurrant and savoury spices. Very enticing. Great purity on the palate, with weightless intensity of dark fruit and harmonious acidity. The tannins are soft and very refined, gently framing the fruit. Cool and well-proportioned, this is very moreish and has more than a hint of the Old World about it. 13.1% Drink 2020 – 2034TP, 13 Nov 2019Wall Street Journal
What Makes a Wine a Classic?
Cathy Corison has quietly built one of the best track records for producing top Napa Cabernet over several decades. This subtle, polished and notably low-alcohol (13%) Cabernet is a shining star in the Napa firmament.Lettie Teague, January 30, 2020Dan Berger: On Wine
I offer an example of greatness. It’s one of the Napa Valley’s most superb Cabs — Cathy Corison’s eponymous 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon just released… I couldn’t have said it better (than what) Cathy says on her website, except perhaps to add that the dried herbs are what make this wine such a winner for me, since we got hints of thyme, wet earth, olive, and sage along with glorious fruit in a really dry wine.Napa Valley Register, Nov 14, 2019California Grapevine
Very Highly Recommended
Medium- dark purplish ruby; attractive, deep, ripe, cassis and blackberry fruit aroma with earthy notes and hints of mocha and baking spice; full body; rich, ripe, cedary, textured, red and black fruit flavors with notes of dried herbs; full tannin; lingering aftertaste.Vol. 45, May 2019purely domestic wine report

The nose is a fresh, pure lanolin and blossom of lilac, jasmine and violet. The palate is stunningly gorgeous on entry rising to a mid-palate of graphite, hard blackberry and notes of earth and tobacco.Doug Wilder, Issue 7.4winereviewonline.com

As always, a meticulously structured offering from Cathy Corison, focused on classic varietal aromas and flavors, not jagged or overblown in any way. Blackberry, currants, mild dried herbs and gentle oak spice are already beautifully integrated, so much so that you’ll be tempted to get right into the case. But as with all of the Corison vintages, you’ll want to hold some into the future – they turn into elegant ladies, always reflecting the proprietor herself. Another beautiful personal statement of restraint and insight.Rich Cook, Dec 10, 2019NorCal Wine

Even tasting blind, the intriguing, savory nose of perfumed dark flowers, subtle black pepper, leather, black fruit, and bay leaf whispered Corison in my ear. The medium-bodied palate is disciplined and juicy with Old World sophistication. Its toothsome tannins are soft on the attack, then firm up to balance the mouthwatering, ripe-tangy fruit. The wine develops with air, but maintains its generally savory demeanor. (BTW, Cathy doesn’t recommend decanting, preferring to let them evolve in the glass.) This wine’s drinking very well now, but has the fruit, acidity, and tannins to age a good, long while. Drink now through 2035+.Fred Swan, fredswan.wine January 2, 2020International Wine Report

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon from Cathy Corison is absolutely beautiful. All about elegance and finesse, this begins with inviting aromas of red currants and dark cherries woven together with pencil shavings, spring flowers, herbs and wet gravel all developing in the glass. This possesses a gorgeous medium body, with silky tannins that glide effortlessly across the palate. It goes on to display wonderful precision and balance with vibrant acidity keeping it fresh and lively through the sleek finish. The 2016 is already drinking extremely well at this early stage, and should continue to age beautifully in bottle for years to come.May 2019JamesSuckling.com

This has a great cassis and sour-cherry nose with hints of lilacs, wet stones and licorice. Quite powerful, but restrained and elegant, this medium-bodied Napa cab has impeccable balance with a very long, clean and dry finish that pulls you back to the glass for more. A great food-wine with just 13.1 per cent alcohol! Drink or hold.May 3, 2019Jeb Dunnuck

This classic effort has lots of cassis, leafy herbs, some damp earth, and sappy spring flower aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, and downright elegant… terrific purity, balance, and length. I'd happily drink bottles over the coming decade or more.

The 2013 Kronos Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is another extraordinary showing in this vintage from Cathy Corison. Kronos is Cathy’s Single Vineyard Cabernet, which comes from an 8-acre parcel in Rutherford that was planted in 1971. The vineyard consists of aged vines, which grow on Saint-George rootstock, and the results yeild a wine of remarkable purity and concentration. In this vintage Kronos offers striking aromatics of dark cherries, blackberries and hints of red currants woven together with violets, sweet spices, graphite and wet stones, all taking shape in the glass. This continues to impress with its rich, luxurious texture, beautifully polished tannins and remarkable overall balance and depth. Everything comes together with wonderful precision, as it expands seamlessly into the long, supple finish, where spices and gorgeous ripe flavors linger on and on. While this is already spectacular, the structure suggests it will certainly continue to age gracefully for many years to come. Overall, this is an absolutely outstanding effort from Cathy Corison and a testament to the tedious work she devotes to the vineyard to maintain these older vines in order to consistently achieve this high level of quality year after year. Cathy Corison has been on an absolutely incredible run as she is producing some of the most compelling and consistent Cabernet Sauvignon in all of Napa Valley, and her 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is another simply outstanding effort. As this begins to open it releases a complex range of seductive aromatics, including blackberries and dark currants, which are woven together with spring florals, graphite, spices and crushed stones along with a lovely savory character all taking shape. This well-structured Cabernet continues to impress on the palate with its full-bodied, polished texture and remarkable overall balance and depth, which leads into the long, layered finish.
