Dry River - New Zealand

Dry River vineyard was established in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum. In 2003 the vineyard and winery were sold to Julian Robertson and Reg Oliver with Neil staying at the helm as Chief Winemaker until his retirement in 2011. The name Dry River was that of one of the earliest South Wairarapa sheep stations. Although our vines are planted several kilometres away on the northern boundary of the Martinborough township, Dry River aptly describes the very arid, gravely and free-draining site. The first wines, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Pinot gris were bottled in 1984 and Dry River has since developed a reputation as one of New Zealand’s most iconic pioneering wineries.

2010 Dry River, Lovat Gewurztraminer Pris: 300,00 DKK
   På lager
Our Gewurztraminer is made in the traditional Alsace style that focuses on concentrated aromatic notes and rich sweet palate flavours.  The fruit is grown on the ‘Lovat’ vineyard exclusively although up until 2009 we also had vines on the ‘Dry River Estate’ vineyard.  We aim to pick the fruit over a number of passes to get a range of flavours.  The wines tend to be high in residual sugar and flavour.  Gewurztraminer is often seen as a wine to be enjoyed early but ours tend to develop well over the medium term in a good cellar.
2011, Dry River Riesling Pris: 300,00 DKK
   På lager
We make Riesling in two styles, our regular dry Riesling and a ‘Selection Riesling’.  Both wines come from the same vineyard, ‘Craighall’ containing vines which were planted in the early 1980’s.  Both styles rely on ripe fruit but vary in their acid/ sugar/ alcohol balance with the Selection carrying more residual sugar and a lower alcohol.  Sometimes the Selection Riesling has a small amount of botrytis affected fruit.  Both wines lend themselves to longer term cellaring.
2010, Dry River Pinot Noir Pris: 500,00 DKK
   På lager
Pinot noir is our largest planted variety, though it only represents one third of our production. We aim to achieve ripe fruit flavours with "transparent" tannins at moderate alcohol levels. We feel this grape should present an elegant character, shy and modest in its youth, but unfolding slowly to expose its charm, finesse and power after 5-10 years of age.

2008, Dry River Syrah Pris: 420,00 DKK
   På lager
We aim to present the essence of cool climate Syrah in our Dry River Syrah.  Picked at the end of the ripening season-sometimes in May-and made in a similar fashion to the Pinot noir, sans the whole bunch. We have pioneered this variety in Martinborough with the first vintage being 1996 and labelled as ‘Arapoff’ Syrah.  We have since purchased the vineyard and renamed it ‘Lovat’.  The vineyard is planted to the ‘Limmer’ clone of Syrah in the early 1990’s and is still regarded as the best selection for high quality Syrah wines. These wines are perhaps the longest lived of our wines with well cellared bottles showing well at 15 years of age.
