Hirsch Vineyards

Perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Fort Ross, Hirsch Vineyards is the birth ground of great pinot noir on the extreme Sonoma Coast. David Hirsch founded the vineyard in 1980 to grow fruit and make site-specific wine. From the start all efforts have been on the growing of fruit that makes wines profoundly characteristic of the site vintage after vintage.

The wines from Hirsch Vineyards give the passionate drinker an experience of the clash of opposites meeting in Nature and Life: the edge of the continent washed by the sea; the eviternal grinding of the North American and Pacific plates along the San Andreas Fault; the wet winters and dry summers caused by the ocean and desert climates; the dripping rainforest and parched pastures; the contact and intermingling of cultures: Native American, Mexican, Russian, European; the change in rural economy from logging and ranching to winegrowing.

In the wines of Hirsch Vineyards you find a natural balance and consistency in the harmonious resolution of these opposites. This complex, unique site produces fruit and wines of unusual acidity and balance with a vintage specific concentration of pinot noir or chardonnay fruit. These are wines to be enjoyed now or laid down for future consumption.

The San Andreas Fault is Hirsch Vineyards signature pinot noir and is crafted to represent the entirety of this multifaceted vineyard. The 2013 San Andreas Fault has fruit from 24 of Hirsch's 61 distinct farming blocks, more than any other wine made from the Hirsch Vineyard. It is the flagship wine from Hirsch, and the wine that represents the summation of this complex vineyard.

Lying adjacent to the San Andreas Fault on the extreme western Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyards is comprised of 72 acres, divided into 67 individual farming blocks. The resulting degree of fragmentation is unmatched even by the famously subdivided vineyards of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Due to the site’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the San Andreas Fault, the vineyard has a fearsome diversity of soils, aspects, elevations and microclimates. This complexity defines our farming and winemaking practices: each block was individually developed and is now farmed, harvested and vinified separately.

It is the flagship wine from Hirsch, and the wine that represents the summation of our complex vineyard.

David Hirsch often says that our greatest asset is time: time for the farmer to learn his land, for the winemaker to understand how to work with the grapes, and for the wines to age in bottle.

Over 37 years of farming and winemaking on the True Sonoma Coast, his accumulated wisdom has shown us that the dominant influence on our farming and winemaking is the San Andreas Fault which lies just half a mile from the Hirsch Vineyard. The wine that captures the complexity, power and energy of this geologic phenomenon is our San Andreas Fault Estate Pinot Noir, the wine that David calls “the Hirsch Hirsch”.

2014, Hirsch Reserve Pinot Noir Pris: 750,00 DKK
   På lager
David Hirsch dreamed for many years of making a reserve pinot noir from his vines. Since our first Reserve in 2009, we have endeavored to capture the most complete and powerful expression of the Hirsch Vineyard through selecting the very best and oldest parcels for this wine.

The 2014 Reserve continues this tradition, bringing together the finest barrels from the vintage to create a wine of intense but elegant fruit, with lithe tannins and an earthy complexity.

Lying adjacent to the great San Andreas Fault on the extreme western Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyards is a single vineyard comprised of 61 distinct farming blocks. These blocks cover an area of 72 acres, resulting in a degree of fragmentation that is unmatched even by the famously subdivided vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. Each block was individually developed and planted based on soil, exposure and topography, and each is farmed, harvested and vinified separately. This process enables us to evaluate each farming block separately throughout fermentation and élevage, and to select only the finest barrels from the best vineyard blocks for the Hirsch Reserve Pinot Noir.

2015, Hirsch Raschen Ridge Pinot Noir Pris: 750,00 DKK

Terroir is within the site; we do not impose it. Our responsibility is to listen and be ready when it shows itself.
The Raschen Ridge Pinot Noir is the result of this observation and patience. Year after year we tasted these blocks, confirming that indeed, this was a singular expression within the Hirsch Vineyard that should be bottled on its own. Finally in 2014 we made the first vintage of this wine. The 2015 vintage at Hirsch produced wines of heart-breaking expressiveness and depth, but at devastatingly low yields.
Made from the highest elevation vineyards at Hirsch, the Raschen Ridge is where our marine, riverine and continental climates meet, merging heat & coolness, moisture and dryness, uplift and erosion. The wine is itself an exercise in resolved opposites: sexy and serious, drinkable and age-worthy, for both the hedonist and the collector.
Henry Raschen (1854–1937) was a painter of the American West who lived on the ranch that is now Hirsch Vineyards. Old-timers called our ranch the Raschen Place, and Henry’s house stood here until 1954.

2015, Hirsch East Ridge Pinot Noir Pris: 750,00 DKK
   På lager
The East Ridge is one of the oldest and most unique sections of the Hirsch Vineyard.

David Hirsch began planting the East Ridge in 1990. It is a topographically distinct micro-site within the Hirsch Vineyard, sloping steeply into an eastern canyon. Fog gathers in the canyon at night, and during the day the cool ocean breezes circulate amongst the vines. However it is often the first place the fog burns off in the morning, making it a relatively warmer site compared with the rest of Hirsch.

Two thirds of the vines on the East Ridge are stricken with phylloxera, a disease that attacks the roots and inhibits the vine’s uptake of nutrients. This results in some of the lowest yields at Hirsch, and requires extremely intensive and meticulous, vine-by-vine farming.

The low yields contribute to the notable concentration of fruit in the East Ridge Pinot Noir. However the phylloxera also devigorates the vines, inhibiting photosynthesis and slowing down sugar accumulation. This combination of low vigor and low yields results in a wine of concentration paired with remarkable elegance and naturally low alcohol. It is a masculine and powerful expression of the Hirsch Vineyard, with fantastic structure, concentration and energy.

The 2015 Hirsch East Ridge Estate Pinot Noir is a selection of the very best barrels from the finest and most expressive blocks on the East Ridge.
