BACKGROUND:
Flame Tokay is one of the rarest grape varieties in California today. It had its heyday up until the 50’s and 60’s in Lodi, after which demands changed. It has been steadily declining ever since, to the point where less than a few acres are left in the whole state. I found it by pure accident and was immediately intrigued by it for winemaking. I’m very glad I took a chance on this variety, because it has proven to make a great wine.
STYLE:
A skin-contact rosé wine. A little lighter than the 2021 vintage, but still with those unmistakable apple and tapenade notes. This new vineyard also has a slight blood orange note emerging, which I’m very excited about.
Not cold stabilized, so expect some slight crystals in bottom when chilled hard.
VINEYARD:
This was the first year I took the fruit from the small Blodgett Vineyard, which we now also farm ourselves using organic principles. The vines are not quite as old as the previous Chandler vineyard, but still closing in on 100 years ( planted in 1926). We have great hopes for this vineyard and are excited to be controlling the farming ourselves moving forward.
